Not exactly correct. Just got back from SNA (Orange County) last week. Gate checks were being done. They are done on a random basis. In this case, I happened to hear they were going to take the first person so I made sure I wasn't first. There is also random id check. All in all, pretty stupid if you ask me but then, again, we are talking about a government agency.
