The problem is that those same systems used "737" to refer to the "737-100", along with 732, 733, 734, 735, 736, 738, and 739. In that context, what comes between "736" and "738"? "737" was already used. "731" is unused, but that would confuse anyone! So, "73G", with G being the seventh letter of the alphabet.
