Oil leak catches fire after jet lands

September 22, 2003

Syracuse firefighters doused a smoking engine on a United Airlines jet
Sunday afternoon after it was diverted to Syracuse for an emergency landing
while flying from Los Angeles to New York.

The Boeing 767 jet was diverted to Syracuse after the pilot noticed an
engine oil pressure indicator light flashing. The plane landed without
trouble and taxied to a remote section at Syracuse Hancock International
Airport. After the passengers got off, leaking oil caught fire, Syracuse
police officer Barbara Kilian said.

United sent a plane from Boston to take the 88 passengers and seven crew
members from Syracuse to JFK International, said Jeff Green, speaking for
United. - Mike McAndrew
