An airline that issues a ticket for you to be carried on another
carrier only does do as agent for that carrier. An airline is not a
tour operator: so, if you miss your connection at LAX, that's tough.
If you are rebooked on AA, then AA has responsibility for all its
flights and connections between its own flights.

Anyone who is really worried about this kind of thing should book with
a tour operator which is acting as a principal, or use only one
airline for all flights or use only one alliance for all  flights.
