American, regional commuter airline to add flights on some routes

(07-30) 15:03 PDT FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) --
American Airlines said Wednesday it would add flights on some routes this
fall to meet higher demand but will reduce overall flights.
The changes will result in modest growth at American's hubs in Dallas-Fo=
rt
Worth, Chicago and Miami in November, said Dan Garton, executive vice
president for marketing. He said the airline anticipates customer demand
for additional flights in selected markets.
Still, because of cuts elsewhere, American said it would operate 8 perce=
nt
fewer flights in November than in July. Earlier this month, American
announced it would slash daily flights at its St. Louis hub by half, from
417 to 207.
Fort Worth-based American, the world's largest carrier, operates about
4,300 daily flights.
In a few cases, American will add new service on Nov. 1, a spokesman sai=
d.
The airline will add service between Boston and New Orleans and between
Miami and Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. Service will also
start between Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Port Au Prince, Haiti, and Santo
Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
On other routes, American will increase the number of daily frequencies,
the spokesman said. American plans to add 27 daily flights from
Dallas-Fort Worth, 19 from Chicago O'Hare and seven from Miami.
The airline's parent, AMR Corp., reported this month that it lost $75
million in the second quarter after getting $358 million in government aid
to reimburse airlines for losses and higher security costs during the Iraq
war.
AMR shares fell 81 cents Wednesday, or more than 8 percent, to close at
$9.05 on the New York Stock Exchange.
