Plans to Shed 2, 000 Jobs June 30, 2003 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 8:53 a.m. ET LONDON (AP) -- The company that owns Britain's rail infrastructure said Monday it will shed some 2,000 jobs, or 14.3 percent of the work force, over the next three years, a move that union leaders say could lead to strikes. Ian McAllister, the chairman of nonprofit company Network Rail, said the moneysaving job cuts would mostly affect administration and contracting staff from the rail company's work force of some 14,000. Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union, described the job losses as ``obscene'' and threatened industrial action to block the redundancies. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/business/AP-Britain-Railway-Cuts.html?ex=1057979465&ei=1&en=57c67fc3eaf5c0d2 --------------------------------- Get Home Delivery of The New York Times Newspaper.
