Air France did have Chicago-Montreal local traffic rights. Air France and Air Canada were the only airlines on this route until 1977, when the US government finally awarded a Chicago-Montreal route to American. Air France also had full local traffic rights between Houston and Mexico City. Several other airlines have had fifth freedom traffic rights between the US and Canada over the years. In the early 90's, Thai actually based an A310 at Seattle, to fly SEA-Toronto-SEA. The SEA-YYZ flight was timed to connect with Thai's SEA-Tokyo-Bangkok 747 flights, and was the only nonstop between the two cities at the time. Joe Wolf
