Lufthansa says plans to resume Baghdad flights FRANKFURT (Reuters) =97 German airline Lufthansa said on Saturday it was=20 seeking approval to resume flights to Baghdad as soon as possible.=20 Lufthansa said it needed the consent of the authorities in Iraq but hoped=20 to take a decision in a few weeks after clarifying issues such as take-off= =20 and landing rights. "With its oil refineries, Baghdad is the country's=20 leading industrial centre and is becoming an increasingly important=20 destination for business travellers," it said in a statement. A spokeswoman= =20 said decisions on the frequency of flights and aircraft to be used would be= =20 taken once approval was granted. Other airlines that have expressed an=20 interest in reintroducing flights to the Iraqi capital include Northwest=20 Airlines Corp and Virgin Atlantic. Lack of paperwork forced the=20 postponement last week of the first commercial flight to Baghdad since=20 U.S.-led forces captured the city in April. Peter Henderson, a South=20 African businessman, had hoped to charter a aircraft to fly 40 passengers=20 on "Air Baghdad" from the Jordanian capital, charging six times the pre-war= =20 airfare. He told Reuters on Thursday that the flight should take place on=20 Sunday. Lufthansa operated commercial flights to Baghdad from 1956 until= 1990. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@xxxxxxxxx Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.cso.gov.tt TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
