Midwest Airlines reports $11.8 million quarterly loss

CHICAGO (Reuters) =97 Midwest Express Holdings Inc. Thursday said it swung=
 to=20
a quarterly loss because of declining demand and rising fuel costs due to=20
the war Iraq that hurt already weak results for the business-oriented air=20
carrier. Midwest Express, parent of Midwest Airlines and Skyway Airlines,=20
said the loss amounted $11.8 million, or 76 cents per share, compared with=
=20
net income of $3.8 million, or 28 cents per share, a year earlier.=20
Operating revenue fell 9.6% to $94.1 million in the quarter from a year=20
earlier for Midwest Express, a Milwaukee based air carrier that has catered=
=20
to business travelers in the past and is attempting a broad cost-cutting=20
plan. In the previously announced plan, Midwest Express aims to save more=20
than $4 million per month through capacity cuts, furloughs, paycuts for=20
remaining workers, attempts to lower airplane lease costs and start some=20
low-fare business. Midwest Express had $23.2 million in unrestricted cash=20
at the end of the first quarter, down from $41.5 million at the end of 2002.
