Another Bradley guard caught sleeping, airport says

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) =97 For the second time in recent weeks, a Bradley=
=20
International Airport security guard has been accused of sleeping on the=20
job, airport officials said. The security guard was stationed at the west=20
end of the airfield, where he assigned to check vehicles and drivers moving=
=20
between the terminal and remote parts of the airfield, The Hartford Courant=
=20
reported. State Police Capt. Robert Duffy told the newspaper a trooper=20
discovered the guard "apparently asleep" at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.=20
Authorities declined to name the guard. State Department of Transportation=
=20
officials said they were investigating the incident, which involved a=20
worker for Murphy Security Service of New Britain. Duffy stressed that the=
=20
private company is not charged with regulating access to the airfield. The=
=20
guard in question denied he was sleeping, according to airport security=20
coordinator Lisa Fazzino. She said her investigation was not complete=20
Tuesday afternoon. She was awaiting a written report from the state police.=
=20
Another Murphy Security guard stationed at the east end of the airport was=
=20
found asleep March 27. Fazzino said this man admitted he was sleeping.=20
Airport officials, citing personnel confidentiality, have not said whether=
=20
he was fired. The state police union has complained about the use of Murphy=
=20
guards at checkpoints formerly staffed by state police. The private service=
=20
was hired last month to reduce state police overtime. State police union=20
president Mark Wallack said Tuesday that unarmed security guards should not=
=20
be doing jobs that had been assigned to armed troopers. Early last month, a=
=20
federal security screener was caught sleeping at an X-ray machine, forcing=
=20
officials to clear an entire concourse and delay two flights.
