I think the lousy weather is a misconception, I lived there for 5 years '97 - '02, and only once in those 5 years do I recall the airport being shutdown due to weather and that was only because the people staffing the airport couldn't get there. I've heard stats that say that the only place in the US that gets more days of sun per year is in Arizona. Weather wise, I think DEN is a pretty nice place to have a hub.

I'm just not sure any other majors would be able to integrate DEN as a hub into their systems. I'm guessing Denver city officials are freaking out about the prospects of UA going out of business. It's a very costly airport and I'm sure United's rent payments take quite a bit of pressure off of Denver tax payers.

Do I remember correctly that the cost of operations at DEN are one of the factors that keeps Southwest out?

I think it would be a shame to have such a beautiful airport go to waste. I wonder if they'd be more successful trying to get JetBlue (to quote the Village People) "Go West."
