Gander airport hit by strike Last Updated Mon, 07 Apr 2003 8:06:39 ST. JOHN'S - The strike by airport workers has spread to a second location in Newfoundland and Labrador. Firefighters, maintenance and office workers walked off the job Monday morning at Gander. People who do similar jobs at the airport in St. John's have been on strike since March 10. Flights were still arriving and departing, though picket lines meant delays for people heading to the airports. Some members of the union remain on the job as they are classified as providing essential service. The workers are members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. They say the strike is about job security, that the airport wants to lay off several of them and contract out the work they do. Airport officials say they can't give the union the absolute job security it's looking for. The employees also say they're after wage increases but the airport isn't offering more money. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@xxxxxxxxx Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.carstt.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
