Strike may hit second Nfld. airport Last Updated Sun, 06 Apr 2003 23:30:27 ST. JOHN'S - Unionized workers at a second major airport in Newfoundland were set to hit picket lines Monday after talks broke off over the weekend. The Gander International Airport Authority had been trying to reach an agreement with the union representing 50 workers. They include firefighters and maintenance workers. Gary Vey, president of the airport authority, said the two sides were not able to agree on a number of issues, including wages. Steve Johnson of the Public Service Alliance of Canada said the talks broke off Saturday over the issue of job security before other key issues could be discussed. A number of the workers are designated as essential, and the airport is expected to remain open. But the airport authority is advising travellers flying out of Gander to allow a lot of extra time to get to the terminal. About 65 unionized workers at St. John's International Airport have been on strike since March 10.
