Which brings up another point.  That $200k salary cited, is the top of the
heap.  For every $200k pilot, there are hundreds earning their way through
the ranks flying freight dogs, beat-up Beavers, etc, for starvation wages.
Even entry-level pilot positions at the majors are not get-rich-quick
schemes.  I bet that 747 skipper spent many an hour flying ridiculous
schedules in the right seat of a 737, or if he's old enough (actually he
probably is) also flying sideways on a Classic, DC10 or 727.  And not at a
grand wage either.

Surely someone who's ground his way up through those ranks has earned the
right to a decent living.

My wife is a GP.  She earns way less than a specialist.  That's the way the
market works, a balance of supply and demand.
