On an unplanned nov-rev rerouting tonight I managed to log what will = surely be my last DL 727 ride. I had flown down to JAX from CVG (on a = CRJ jumpseat<G>) to look at a car I am thinking of buying, a World Rally = Blue Subaru WRX for Baha and anyone else who cares, and planned to come = back home on Comair through DCA. But, the equipment going to DCA was = late inbound and I would have misconnected and been stuck in Washington. = Delta had canceled one flight to ATL and all of the others were = oversold big time. After a few phone calls my prearranged backup plan = was in place and I was listed on AirTran up to ATL on an ID90 and then = on to CVG on Daddy. I didn't have time to ask about the equipment on = the DL flight but assumed it was a Mad Dog because all my flights lately = have been on 88s including 3.5 hours CVG-PHX in fan blade class.....fun. The ride to ATL on N839AT (built in 1967!) was uneventful. Hartsfield = is a pain it the can, especially if you are connecting interline. I had = to take the train from Concourse D to Concourse B, get off and head up = the escalator just to find a flight monitor. Why they don't have these = in the transportation mall is beyond me. Of course I was in the wrong = Concourse and had to head back downstairs to take the train to A. When I finally got to gate A30 for DL216 there sat N8891Z a 727-225 = (ex-Eastern?). I would have loved to ride up front but we can only do = that on DL and the other Delta Connection carriers if the cabin is full. = First was full but there was plenty of room in cattle class so back 10F = it was. The plane was in Ron Allen collors and was in pretty good shape = to be heading for the desert next week. The cabin was clean but the = lighting and Pax Service Units were not up to new aircraft standards. = It was another uneventful flight except that I was really craving a = Bloody Mary for some reason and there was just an abbreviated drink = service. Water, Lemonade or Cranberry Juice and snack mix....no booze, = don't ask. We passed just east of CVG and did a tight left pattern to = land on 18R. I talked to the F/O in the jetway on the way out. He said = that only 6 72s were left and that this one would likely be on its way = to the desert in the next few days. They are being converted to cargo = and going overseas. According to the F/O many of AirTran's DC-9s were = ex-DL and they weren't going to make that mistake again. BTW don't worry, I hooked up with the guys coming off shift in the = office and took care of that craving at the local watering hole soon = after landing.
