Airlines slash flights, jobs on war impact Airlines are canceling flights and cutting jobs as a result of the war in=20 Iraq. ALITALIA =97 Through April 13, the airline has canceled one return flight=20 between Milan and Paris. A return flight between Rome and Paris is canceled= =20 March 30 to April 13. No flights to the Middle East have been canceled. AMERICA WEST =97 No flight cuts, some layoffs for upper management AMERICAN AIRLINES =97 The world's largest carrier will cut its international= =20 schedule 6% in April by trimming flights to Europe and Latin America. These= =20 reductions add to a previously announced cut of 7% on U.S. domestic routes. BRITISH AIRWAYS =97 Europe's largest airline has suspended flights to and=20 from Kuwait and Tel Aviv until further notice. The airline also has reduced= =20 its London to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, service from twice daily to once= =20 daily but is continuing to fly to Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. CATHAY PACIFIC =97 The Hong Kong-based carrier said its twice-weekly Riyadh= =20 flight will stop over in Dubai instead of Bahrain. CONTINENTAL =97 The fifth-largest U.S. carrier will cut more than 1,200 jobs= =20 by year's end, including 125 pilots, 500 reservations agents, 350 airport=20 agents and 250 others. The airline has also suspended some flights across=20 the Atlantic and Pacific. It cut one of two daily round-trip flights from=20 its Newark hub to London's Gatwick, and the same to Paris Charles de Gaulle= =20 airport. From April 6 through May 1, Continental will fly smaller planes=20 between Newark and both Amsterdam and Rome. It will reduce service between= =20 Newark and Tokyo to four flights per week through April 24. DELTA AIR LINES =97 The No. 3 U.S. carrier said it will cut about 12% of its= =20 flights. Delta will not eliminate domestic routes but will cut some flights= =20 on routes with multiple scheduled flights. Some trans-Atlantic flights will= =20 also be suspended. The U.S. cutbacks begin March 27 and the trans-Atlantic cutbacks begin on=20 April 6. Cutbacks might continue after April if passenger demand remains=20 weak, Delta said. FINNAIR =97 Finnair will eliminate about 1,200 jobs, or 11% of its work= force=20 by 2005. Approximately 200 jobs will be cut in its travel agency arm, and=20 another 1,000 jobs will be eliminated in its other business units. HEMUS AIR =97 The Bulgarian private carrier has suspended flights to and= from=20 Dubai until further notice. IBERIA =97 Spain's Iberia will cut flights by 4% in March and 3% in April= due=20 to weaker demand on European routes. IRAN AIR =97 Iran's civil aviation organization said the carrier had=20 suspended all flights to Kuwait and Abadan in southwestern Iran. Flights to= =20 the United Arab Emirates have also been cut back. JAT =97 Jugoslovenski Aerotransport said it had suspended flights to=20 Damascus, Beirut, Tel Aviv and Dubai. KLM ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES =97 KLM said it would reduce flights by about 7%=20 from last year including flights to New York. It plans to cut flights or=20 use smaller planes on some European routes and has canceled flights to and= =20 from Kuwait and Amman, Jordan from Amsterdam until further notice. KOREAN AIR =97 South Korea's largest airline said it would suspend flights= to=20 Dubai and Cairo and reduce flights to U.S. cities including New York,=20 Chicago, San Francisco and Honolulu through May. Earlier this month, it cut its route to Saipan due to low demand. KUWAIT AIRWAYS =97 The airline said it would cancel all flights to Iran and= =20 other unspecified flights due to low demand. LUFTHANSA =97 Germany's largest airline has canceled all flights to and from= =20 Kuwait and services from there to Dammam, Saudi Arabia. It has restarted=20 service to Amman, Jordan, Tel Aviv and Beirut. MALEV =97 Hungary's national airline has resumed scheduled flights to= Beirut,=20 Cairo, Tel Aviv and Larnaca, Cyprus. NORTHWEST AIRLINES =97 The No. 4 U.S. airline said it was cutting 4,900 jobs= =20 or about 11% of its work force. The airline will slash 12% of its flights=20 within North America, as well as to the Pacific region and Europe. OLYMPIC =97 Greece's Olympic Airways said it will stop flying to Dubai,=20 Beirut and Alexandria, Egypt. It will reduce flights to Cairo and Larnaca, Cyprus, and consider other=20 temporary service cuts. It has suspended flights to Kuwait. QANTAS AIRWAYS =97 Australia's biggest airline said it would axe 1,000 jobs= =97=20 or 3% of its workforce =97 by forcing staff to take leave as it trimmed=20 expenses ahead of the possible conflict. SINGAPORE AIRLINES =97 Singapore Airlines cut 65 weekly flights =97= including=20 14 to Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco =97 from= =20 April through May 31. The airline also canceled flights to the capitals of= =20 Belgium and Spain and rerouted flights to London and Istanbul, Turkey, to=20 avoid flying over Iraq. Flights to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates were=20 scaled back earlier. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES =97 No job, flight cuts SWISS INTERNATIONAL AIR LINES =97 The airline has dropped two of its six=20 weekly connections between Zurich and Cairo TAROM =97 Romania's state airline said it had suspended its three weekly=20 flights to Dubai until further notice. It has also suspended its two weekly= =20 flights to Beirut and Amman, Jordan, due to scarce demand. TURKISH AIRLINES =97 The carrier has canceled some less profitable domestic= =20 routes and suspended flights to Kuwait and Bahrain. Further cuts are under= =20 review as passengers and bookings have fallen by about 50% year on year=20 since war broke out in neighboring Iraq, a spokesman said. UNITED AIRLINES =97 United Airlines will temporarily cut 104 domestic= flights=20 and 20 international flights.
