Airlines slash flights, jobs on war impact

Airlines are canceling flights and cutting jobs as a result of the war in=20
Iraq. Here's a Reuters summary of job cuts and service changes:

AIR CANADA =97 March flights will be cut by 8% year-over-year. Flights in=20
April and May will be cut by 15%. The airline has cut 3,600 jobs, or 9% of=
=20
its work force this year.

AIR FRANCE =97 Air France has restarted its Paris-Tel Aviv flight.

ALITALIA =97 Through April 13, the airline has canceled one return flight=20
between Milan and Paris. A return flight between Rome and Paris is canceled=
=20
March 30 to April 13. No flights to the Middle East have been canceled.

AMERICA WEST =97 No flight cuts, some layoffs for upper management

AMERICAN AIRLINES =97 The world's largest carrier will cut its international=
=20
schedule 6% in April by trimming flights to Europe and Latin America. These=
=20
reductions add to a previously announced cut of 7% on U.S. domestic routes.

BRITISH AIRWAYS =97 Europe's largest airline has suspended flights to and=20
from Kuwait and Tel Aviv until further notice. The airline also has reduced=
=20
its London to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, service from twice daily to once=
=20
daily but is continuing to fly to Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

CATHAY PACIFIC =97 The Hong Kong-based carrier said its twice-weekly Riyadh=
=20
flight will stop over in Dubai instead of Bahrain.

=20
by year's end, including 125 pilots, 500 reservations agents, 350 airport=20
agents and 250 others. The airline has also suspended some flights across=20
the Atlantic and Pacific. It cut one of two daily round-trip flights from=20
its Newark hub to London's Gatwick, and the same to Paris Charles de Gaulle=
=20
airport. From April 6 through May 1, Continental will fly smaller planes=20
between Newark and both Amsterdam and Rome. It will reduce service between=
=20
Newark and Tokyo to four flights per week through April 24.

DELTA AIR LINES =97 The No. 3 U.S. carrier said it will cut about 12% of its=
=20
flights. Delta will not eliminate domestic routes but will cut some flights=
=20
on routes with multiple scheduled flights. Some trans-Atlantic flights will=
=20
also be suspended.
The U.S. cutbacks begin March 27 and the trans-Atlantic cutbacks begin on=20
April 6. Cutbacks might continue after April if passenger demand remains=20
weak, Delta said.

FINNAIR =97 Finnair will eliminate about 1,200 jobs, or 11% of its work=
 force=20
by 2005. Approximately 200 jobs will be cut in its travel agency arm, and=20
another 1,000 jobs will be eliminated in its other business units.

HEMUS AIR =97 The Bulgarian private carrier has suspended flights to and=
 from=20
Dubai until further notice.

IBERIA =97 Spain's Iberia will cut flights by 4% in March and 3% in April=
 due=20
to weaker demand on European routes.

IRAN AIR =97 Iran's civil aviation organization said the carrier had=20
suspended all flights to Kuwait and Abadan in southwestern Iran. Flights to=
=20
the United Arab Emirates have also been cut back.

JAT =97 Jugoslovenski Aerotransport said it had suspended flights to=20
Damascus, Beirut, Tel Aviv and Dubai.

=20
other unspecified flights due to low demand.

=20

 Beirut,=20

within North America, as well as to the Pacific region and Europe.

OLYMPIC =97 Greece's Olympic Airways said it will stop flying to Dubai,=20
Beirut and Alexandria, Egypt.
It will reduce flights to Cairo and Larnaca, Cyprus, and consider other=20
temporary service cuts. It has suspended flights to Kuwait.

QANTAS AIRWAYS =97 Australia's biggest airline said it would axe 1,000 jobs=
 =97=20
or 3% of its workforce =97 by forcing staff to take leave as it trimmed=20
expenses ahead of the possible conflict.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES =97 Singapore Airlines cut 65 weekly flights =97=
 including=20
14 to Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco =97 from=
=20
April through May 31. The airline also canceled flights to the capitals of=

flights to Beirut and Amman, Jordan, due to scarce demand.

TURKISH AIRLINES =97 The carrier has canceled some less profitable domestic=
=20
routes and suspended flights to Kuwait and Bahrain. Further cuts are under=
=20
review as passengers and bookings have fallen by about 50% year on year=20
since war broke out in neighboring Iraq, a spokesman said.

UNITED AIRLINES =97 United Airlines will temporarily cut 104 domestic=
 flights=20
and 20 international flights. It's reducing flights to Amsterdam,=20

week and violated a requirement of its bankruptcy financing but was=20
negotiating with both parties. The airline said 5% of workers' pay would be=
=20
deferred 18 months because of war.
