Man charged with illegally entering a Web site and canceling reservations

BOSTON (AP) =97 A Worcester man faces charges of illegally entering the Web=
=20
site of a Boston travel agency where he used to work and canceling airline=
=20
ticket reservations for 60 passengers at Christmas time two years ago, but=
=20
his motive remains a mystery. James E. O'Brien, 51, was indicted Wednesday=
=20
by a federal grand jury in Boston. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years=20
in prison and a $250,000 fine. O'Brien was charged with knowingly and=20
without authorization causing the transmission of a program or information,=
=20
code or command that resulted in damage in excess of $5,000 to a protected=
=20
computer at Mill-Run Tours Inc., a travel agency with offices in Boston and=
=20
throughout the nation. O'Brien allegedly sent commands to the computer Dec.=
=20
18, 2000, canceling airline ticket reservations that resulted in passengers=
=20
being left stranded at airports, according to the indictment. Mill-Run=20
Tours lost more than $95,000 because of the cancellations. Mill-Run Tours=20
sells airline tickets to travel agents, who in turn sell them to travelers.

Syed Qamar, manager of Mill-Run Tours in Boston, said O'Brien was hired to=
=20
work at the company's New York location on software used by travel agents=20
to order tickets for commercial flights on the Internet. O'Brien later=20
worked in Boston.
O'Brien left Mill-Run in July 1999, according to the indictment announced=20
by U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and William D. Chase, acting special=20
agent in charge of the FBI in New England. Qamar did not know why O'Brien=20
left the company, and the indictment did not indicate whether he left of=20
his own volition or was asked to leave. "I don't know what the grudge was,"=
=20
Qamar told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester. "He canceled the tickets=20
without anybody noticing. In high season, it's hard to get a seat back."
