He wanted to demonstrate how strong the 707 was.  It was a great aircraft!
One lost several feet of its wing on take off one time (from either SFO or
Travis AFB, forget which) yet it made it down in one piece.

At the risk of starting the Boeing versus "them" war, Boeing makes strong
aircraft!
