Federal investigation clears pilot who flew close to Waikiki high-rise HONOLULU (AP) =97 A federal investigation found that the pilot of a China=20 Airlines jumbo jet didn't violate any rules when he flew over Waikiki=20 earlier this month, despite complaints from residents of a high-rise=20 building who said the jet flew dangerously close to their building. The=20 pilot of China Airlines Flight 018 "did not violate any regulations or=20 deviate from any instructions" when he flew over Waikiki on Jan. 4, said=20 Paul Turk, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, which=20 completed its review of the pilot on Jan. 14. The pilot did not follow=20 standard practice used by other pilots approaching Honolulu International=20 Airport under similar circumstances, Turk said Wednesday. The pilot was=20 operating under "visual approach" and approaching from the east because of= =20 kona winds. Although he flew one-quarter mile inland, the FAA found the=20 pilot did not drop below the minimum altitude of 1,200 feet. "He didn't do= =20 anything wrong but the standard practice, even on visual approaches, was to= =20 stay over water," Turk said. "For people experienced with this and flying=20 in over the ocean, that is what is expected." There were no FAA=20 instructions at the time telling pilots to do that, Turk said. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@escape.ca Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: www.pichemas.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
