Six airport workers were injured Sunday after a plane struck a
passenger loading bridge at La Guardia Airport, authorities said.
Two mechanics were moving the Northwest Airlines Airbus A319 from a
parking space to a gate at about 6:25 a.m. when it struck the loading
bridge, causing its landing gear to collapse, according to Kurt
Ebenhock, a spokesman for the airline.
There were no passengers on the bridge or the plane, he said.
A customer service agent on the bridge, three ground employees
guiding the aircraft and the two mechanics were taken to a hospital,
he said.
The workers were being treated at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens for
minor injuries, according to the Fire Department.
A second Northwest airplane, a Boeing 757, was also damaged in the
collision, and both planes were being removed from service, Ebenhock
said. He could not immediately provide details on the damage to the
second plane.
Two Northwest flights, Flight 1653 scheduled to depart at 8 a.m. to
Minneapolis, and Flight 531, scheduled to leave at 2:59 p.m. for
Detroit, have been canceled.
Passengers were being rebooked on other flights, Ebenhock said.
