Continental Narrows Its Quarterly Loss January 16, 2003 By REUTERS HOUSTON, Jan. 15 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines said today that it had cut its fourth-quarter loss by 27 percent as its holiday traffic and cargo shipping surged, but said it did not expect to return to profitability this year. Continental, the first of the major carriers to report its results, posted a net loss of $109 million, $1.67 a diluted share, for the quarter. It lost $149 million, or $2.58 a diluted share, in the period a year earlier. Wall Street analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected the company to lose $1.99 a share. Continental, which is based in Houston, said its revenue grew more than 17 percent, to $2.04 billion, as holiday travel was stronger than expected and certain segments, particularly its transcontinental business, performed well. Continental will report a loss for the current first quarter and probably the full year, Gordon Bethune, the airline's chief executive, said. Continental took a $161 million charge during the year for the impairment of some aircraft in its fleet and other items. ExpressJet Holdings, which runs the Continental Express service on smaller regional jets, said today that its quarterly profit had more than doubled as its fleet grew. Continental's passenger revenue rose 16 percent during the quarter, while its revenue from shipping cargo and running charter services, which makes up only 7.7 percent of its total revenue, climbed 36 percent, topping Wall Street forecasts. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/16/business/16AIR.html?ex=1043752287&ei=1&en=3b769d53777036d9 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@nytimes.com or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@nytimes.com.
