JFK ATTACK WARNING

New York has been put on terror alert after a plot to blow up JFK Airport was uncovered by US police.

Muslim terrorists planned to drive three car bombs, each packed with 100kgs of explosives, into the airport and two other New York targets.

The gang were alleged to have been planning to carry out the attack this month.

But police were not sure how reliable their informant was and called the threat "low credibility", the New York Post reported.

"As of early January 2003, a group of activists was planning to attack Kennedy Airport and two other targets in the New York City area," says a terror bulletin issued by the NYPD on Sunday.

"The attack will be executed using three explosive devices weighing 100 kilograms. The explosive devices will be placed in three cars, which will be set to detonate remotely," the bulletin said.

Customs said the terrorists - members of a group called Algerian Tahir bin Ammar al-Yusifi - were supposed to infiltrate the United States from Ontario, Canada, and use Albany as their launching pad.

They were going to attack one of the airport terminals along with a petrol station and a clerk's office in the city.

The FBI last month put out a nationwide warning for a group of men who had slipped into the US from Canada.

But the report was later dismissed as a hoax.
