While everyone remembers Friday night's double overtime bowl game in Tempe, a lesser known series was determined earlier in the day. A federal judge shot down the city of Tempe's efforts to block the paving of Phoenix Sky Harbor's middle runway. Tempe, citing noise, pollution and anything else they could pull out of thin air, has been battling with Phoenix over the use and expansion of Sky Harbor International for years. Even though aircraft departing to the east have followed the banks of the Rio Salado since the airport opened, Tempe has spent millions of dollars funding improvements along the banks of the riverbed (including a two mile lake!) in an effort to thwart Sky Harbor. The approved work involves pouring 18 inches of concrete over the existing center runway and can only be performed during cooler winter weather as concrete is not a fan of 110 degree days!
