United, ANA to jointly operate Osaka-Honolulu route United Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) will begin jointly operating flights between Osaka and Honolulu, according to The Associated Press. The agreement goes into effect March 30 and will allow United to resume service between Honolulu and Kansai International Airport in western Japan for the first time since October 1998. United is attempting to slash its operating costs after filing for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 9. The troubled U.S. airline's aircraft currently sit idle on the tarmac at Osaka's Kansai Airport each night after arriving from San Francisco. Under the pact, those planes will now operate the daily round trip to Honolulu. ANA will suspend the use of its own aircraft and instead allocate them to its Osaka-Shanghai route, where it plans to double the number of flights. Called a code-share agreement, the pact allows the carriers sell tickets on each other's flights and offer reciprocal perks, such as frequent flier miles. The two airlines are partners in the global Star Alliance airline network. The deal brings the airlines' total number of international code-share routes to 18.
