CARIBBEAN Sun Airlines Inc has received its certification as a scheduled
United States (US) flag air carrier by the US Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) and will begin service from the US to the Caribbean in
January 2003. In an announcement out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the
sister airline of regional carrier Caribbean Star said the initial service
would originate in San Juan, Puerto Rico and expand to include mainland US
locations later next year. Chairman and sole shareholder of the airline, R
Allen Stanford, said the development represents "an important day for the
many people who have worked hard to make this airline a reality". Company
President YoIanda Suarez said: "We intend to build this airline into the
carrier of choice for travel to the Caribbean." Caribbean Sun's initial
fleet will consist of DeHavilland Dash 8s. The airline will provide regular
flights from San Juan to St Maarten, St. Kitts, Tortola and Antigua.
