Boeing shelves Sonic Cruiser project in favor of 'super-efficient' jet Boeing has abandoned its plans to develop a racy, sleek "sonic cruiser," and will instead focus on a new super-efficient plane that will look much like the 767 and 777. Boeing's decision comes as most major U.S. airlines are looking for any way to maximize revenue and return to profitability. "The balance of the airlines is toward efficiency," Boeing commercial boss Alan Mulally told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Both the sonic cruiser and the "super-efficient" models would carry between 200 and 250 passengers more than 8,500 miles per trip. The Sonic Cruiser would travel 15% to 20% faster than today's commercial jets, while the more traditional plane would be up to 20% more fuel-efficient than the current 767. Analysts say that if Boeing is successful in the development of the more convential proposal, it would "fly circles" around rival Airbus' plans for its A380 jumbo jet.
