Boarding pass rule to expand A new security rule requiring passengers to have their boarding passes in hand before clearing screening checkpoints is expected to be in effect in at least 20 airports by the year's end, according to Aviation Week. The new rule requires all passengers to go through screening at the main security checkpoint, though it eliminates many of the random gate-side checks that proved to be highly unpopular. At airports where it is currently in place, the new procedure is receiving positive marks, reports The Washington Times. Airports say they are finding that passenger wait times are actually decreasing after the main screening checkpoint, and airlines are reporting improved on-time takeoffs because flights aren't held for at-the-gate screening. Airlines have also responded with self-service check-in kiosks to help reduce lines at the main ticket counter. Some airlines, including American, are even rolling out programs that allow passengers to print out their boarding passes before leaving for the airport. "The reason we require the boarding pass [before security] is it has the information that shows you are a selectee for screening," Transportation Security Administration spokesman Brian Turmail told The Dallas Morning News. "If American has found a way that passengers can print out their boarding pass and it contains the information that we need, then off-the-cuff, it seems like a good system."
