Business travelers get break on $100 fee
By Marilyn Adams, USA TODAY

In a gift to business travelers, United Airlines will rescind a new $100
fee for passengers who leave on earlier or later flights the same day they
have a flight booked. "We've been listening," United Senior Vice President
Chris Bowers told corporate clients in a conference call Thursday. To boost
revenue, United and other airlines had planned to start charging travelers
with non-refundable tickets a $100 standby fee to fly earlier or later to
the same city on the same day. Business travelers often need to leave
earlier or later when their schedules change. Bowers said canceling the fee
was an effort to be more user-friendly.
United's fee would have started in January. Delta, which already charges
the fee, and American, which planned to start in January, had no immediate
response. The decision was hailed by travel agents. "Those corporate
customers are incredibly important to United," said Thom Nulty of Navigant
International. "They need to do things to make sure they don't jump ship."
United filed for bankruptcy protection Monday.
