Delta to reward big spenders

ATLANTA (AP) =97 Delta Air Lines is reshaping its SkyMiles program to reward=
=20
customers who spend more on tickets.
Under the new guidelines, announced Wednesday, the program will award=20
"elite" status based on a combination of miles flown and fares purchased,=
=20
instead of only on miles or different flights flown. The modifications go=20
into effect Jan. 1 and do not affect customers' status earned this year for=
=20
the 2003 membership year, Delta said. Delta SkyMiles members earn mileage=20
by flying Delta, Delta connection carriers, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle=20
and Delta's airline partners. The elite status comes with first-class=20
upgrades, bonus miles and numerous time-saving perks. Customers now will=20
earn elite status based on Medallion Qualification Miles =97 a multiple of=
=20
the distance traveled and fare class purchased. Qualification levels will=20
remain unchanged at 25,000 for Silver Medallion, 50,000 for Gold Medallion=
=20
and 100,000 for Platinum Medallion. The move will allow Delta's most=20
profitable customers to earn elite status quicker. In afternoon trading on=
=20
the New York Stock Exchange, Delta shares were down 10 cents at $12.69.
