Rock-bottom airfares could be on the way up

Airfares have dropped to their lowest levels in more than 20 years during
this holiday season, but that's not likely to last. By the time the busy
summer travel season rolls around, airfares are likely to begin climbing as
the financially struggling airline industry looks to squeeze more money
from passengers, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In addition,
American and Delta have begun experiments designed to lower the price of
last-minute, business-oriented fares. But if that movement takes hold
across the industry, analysts say it will likely push up the average price
of leisure tickets. However, even if the expected upward trend
materializes, bargains aren't likely to disappear anytime soon in the
ultra-competitive airline industry. "The competition is not expected to go
along quietly," said analyst Baker.
