Qantas to Buy a Stake in Air New Zealand November 25, 2002 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Monday, Nov. 25 - Qantas Airways, Australia's largest airline, will acquire 22.5 percent of Air New Zealand in a deal that ends nearly a year of talks, the airlines said today. Under the deal, Qantas will invest as much as 550 million New Zealand dollars ($276.5 million) into Air New Zealand, which is 82 percent owned by the government. The combined operations would be controlled by the New Zealand carrier. Qantas will assume two seats on Air New Zealand's board. The two airlines dominate the New Zealand and Australian domestic markets and travel between the two countries. They carry nearly 90 percent of the traffic to and from Los Angeles. The airlines have been talking about a closer relationship since the New Zealand government bailed out the national carrier in December. The deal must still be approved by New Zealand's Commerce Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/25/business/worldbusiness/25AUSS.html?ex=1039240072&ei=1&en=a03e4dac4aa2473c HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@nytimes.com or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@nytimes.com.
