BWIA to fly Latin skies By Richard Lord Guardian 11.22.02 National airline BWIA West Indies Airways will begin flying to Havana, Cuba, from January next year, Trade and Industry Minister Kenneth Valley said yesterday. In a statement to the House of Representatives, Valley said the national airline would also commence flights to Santo Domingo and Costa Rica by March 2003. He said this formed part of Trinidad and Tobago's initiative to host the permanent Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Administrative Secretariat. Valley said that Trinidad and Tobago was now "the front runner" in this bid, having the support of 15 states. Trinidad and Tobago requires the support of at least 18 states to host the Secretariat. Valley also said that this country would host one of three Trade Negotiating Committee meetings next year. If this country succeeded in hosting the FTAA Secretariat "Trinidad and Tobago will benefit from the enhanced international profile of being headquarters to the largest Free Trade Area in the World", he said. "Trinidad and Tobago will undoubtedly enjoy additional foreign exchange inflows, use of transportation and entertainment centres and employment of nationals in a number of support activities," Valley added. In response to Valley's announcement, BWIA's director of corporate communications Clint Williams said: "BWIA has always been and will always be committed to the development of the region and will continue to work with the government in this area."
