Japan's second largest carrier reported Friday a net loss of 8.1 billion yen during the six months ended in September in contrast to a profit of 16.8 billion yen a year ago. First half sales at All Nippon Airways slipped 2.6 percent to 622 billion yen ($5 billion) from 638.7 billion yen a year ago. Revenue from international passengers edged down 3.5 percent, while revenue from travel in Japan dipped 4.4 percent. ANA said recovery from the terrorist attacks was coming slowly. Shrinking demand and growing competition pushed down fares, it said. It has faced fierce competition at home with Japan Airlines System Corp., which was formed by a merger of two major carriers and remains strong in both local and international travel. For the full year ending in March 2003, ANA forecast a loss of 18 billion yen ($147 million). In May, it said it expected a profit of 2 billion yen for the year. It also revised its revenue forecast downward to 1.23 trillion yen ($10 billion) from 1.275 trillion yen. =20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 2002 AP
