US Airways says Alabama pension fund wins equity bid

NEW YORK (Reuters) =97 Bankrupt airline US Airways Group Inc. Monday named=
=20
the Retirement Systems of Alabama as the winning bidder for an eventual=20
equity stake in the company, after a bidding period expired and left the=20
pension fund's offer uncontested. US Airways, which is operating under=20
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said its choice of the Alabama pension=20
fund buttressed its plans for a "fast-track" emergence from bankruptcy. US=
=20
Airways expects to rise out of bankruptcy in March, after filing a plan of=
=20
reorganization in mid-December. The Retirement Systems of Alabama offered=20
$500 million in emergency financing to keep the airline's operations=20
running during bankruptcy, along with another $240 million for a 37.5%=20
equity stake in the company upon its emergence from bankruptcy. The pension=
=20
fund's bid, which was announced in September, topped an earlier offer led=20
by financier David Bonderman's Texas Pacific Group.
