Foes "should be wary" as Southwest adds new transcontinental route Southwest said today that it is speeding up plans for the delivery of the new Boeing 737 aircraft that it has on order, saying the additional planes will allow it to "cautiously resume our growth plans." The airline has already said it won't add new destinations before 2004, but that it would instead focus on adding additional service between cities it already serves. One of Southwest's planned service additions is a new daily nonstop between Baltimore and San Jose scheduled to begin Jan. 12. Currently, Southwest service between those airports requires one or more connections. Southwest commenced its first coast-to-coast flight earlier this year when it began flying between Baltimore and Los Angeles, signaling that the discount carrier was looking to try its hand at the lucrative "long-haul" market that had previously been dominated by the nation's major carriers such as American and United. "Other airlines should be wary," travel analyst Henry Harteveldt told The Baltimore Sun. The new Baltimore-San Jose nonstop may be an attempt to keep up with discount rival JetBlue, whose competition with Southwest has grown increasingly intense over the past few months. JetBlue also offers nonstop service between the Washington-Baltimore and San Francisco area markets, though its flights operate between Washington Dulles and Oakland.
