Lufthansa to create new jobs FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) =97 Germany's Lufthansa said Monday it plans to=20 create up to 2,000 new jobs next year as the company rebounds from the=20 slump that followed the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Lufthansa has=20 forecast a large increase in operating profits this year and said in=20 mid-September it would buy 10 new Airbus A330-300 jetliners to replace=20 older aircraft and expand its fleet serving long-range routes ahead of an=20 expected increase in demand. On Monday, it said that it plans to recruit=20 1,800 flight attendants, 340 pilots and 410 airport staff next year, market= =20 developments permitting. Allowing for retirements and other staff turnover,= =20 that means the airline will increase its work force by between 1,500 and=20 2,000, spokeswoman Karin Weber said. Lufthansa currently has nearly 92,000= =20 employees, more than 57,000 of them in Germany, where it is the dominant=20 airline. The airline has credited measures to cut capacity and costs after Sept. 11= =20 last year with helping it to a reduced net loss of 27 million euros ($26.5= =20 million) in the first half of the year compared with 43 million euros in=20 the first half of 2001. Lufthansa idled planes and dropped routes in the=20 wake of the fall in air traffic after the attacks on the United States.
