40 pilots may go home in 3 months By Ken Chee Hing Trinidad News Up TO 40 pilots may find themselves without jobs with BWIA West Indies Airlines in three months. Corporate Communications Manager Clint Williams yesterday confirmed a report given to Newsday by some pilots that the airline had written the Trinidad Air Line Pilots Association (TALPA) informing them of the impending cost cutting measure. But the action should come as no surprise to the pilots who were aware of the dwindling fortunes of the airline resulting from cancelled flights over the busy summer vacation. BWIA is said to have suffered an US$8 million loss over the period. "We are obliged to give the union three-months' notice of any planned phasing out of the Dash 8 fleet," said Williams. "As a matter of fact a meeting is now in progress with the union to discuss the matter, and no action will be taken right away." Williams said no notice was sent to any individual pilot. BWIA officials had publicly announced that fleet rationalisation would have been one of the options available to the airline. The role of the Dash 8, which acted as regional feeders for BWIA's international flights, will be assumed by LIAT's Dash 8s. BWIA owns 29 percent of LIAT.
