LIAT =96 The Caribbean Airline ceased ground handling operations at VC Bird=
=20
International Airport yesterday and transferred its business to a new joint=
=20
venture company in which it will maintain the majority=20
shareholding. Caribbean Airport Services (CAS) was born out of the=20
restructuring programme embarked upon by LIAT=92s management to secure the=
=20
long term future of the company. LIAT invited a number of interested=20
parties to share in this partnership, which enables the Company to separate=
=20
ground handling from its core business of air transportation. Garry Cullen=
=20
CEO of LIAT said, =93SERVISAIR, the world=92s largest independent airline=20
ground handling company which handles over 700 airlines at 200 airport=20
locations in 40 countries, are in the latter stages of negotiations to join=
=20
the venture. They have however entered into a service agreement to assist=20
CAS during its start-up period.=94 CAS will have a very competitive cost=20
base, and will be positioned to successfully compete for other airline=20
contracts at its home base in Antigua, whilst pursuing expansion=20
opportunities throughout the region. The handling company, working in=20
consort with the new LIAT is committed to the delivery of excellence in=20
customer service and will be staffed by newly trained management and staff=
=20
and will also include some former LIAT employees. In wishing CAS a very=20
successful future, Cullen paid tribute to departing staff of the former=20
LIAT airport operation, whom he described had given many years of loyal=20
service to the company. This latest development, takes LIAT another step=20
towards consolidating its position as the leader in air transport and a=20
first choice airline for the peoples of the Caribbean region.
