Russian plane crash kills 14

MOSCOW (AP) =97 A Russian Il-86 cargo plane crashed into a forest Sunday=20
shortly after taking off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo-1 airport, killing 14=20
people. There were two survivors. The broken fuselage was visible in a=20
ditch in a wooded area of birch trees and bushes several hundred yards=20
from one of the airport's runways. Smoke was still rising from the=20
smoldering wreckage. About two dozen ambulances and fire trucks were racing=
=20
around the scene of the crash. Vasily Nayuk, an official with the=20
Emergency Situations Ministry, said that according to preliminary=20
information 14 people were killed and two stewardesses had survived and=20
were hospitalized in critical condition. The broken fuselage was visible=20
in a ditch in a wooded area of birch trees and bushes several hundred=20
meters from one of the airport's runways. Smoke was still rising from the=20
smoldering wreckage. About two dozen ambulances and fire trucks were racing=
=20
around the scene of the crash. The airport, which serves both domestic and=
=20
international flights, was running normally with planes taking off and=20
landing. The cargo plane was on its way from Moscow to St. Petersburg on a=
=20
technical flight. When it crashed, it barely missed the Dmitrov highway=20
northwest of the capital. The highway was busy, as many Muscovites were on=
=20
their way back into the city from their country homes at the end of a hot=20
summer weekend. The aircraft belonged to the Pulkovsky airlines, which=20
operates regular service between Moscow and St. Petersburg. An eyewitness=
=20
who identified himself by his first name, Konstantin, said that the plane=20
had banked hard on its left-hand side, hit the ground and exploded. The=20
Il-86 is a workhorse of Russian airlines for nearly 30 years. It is a=20
four-engine wide-bodied plane and is often used by top Russian officials=20
for travel.
