New FAA Radar Will Cut
Weather-Related Delays

  <http://www.nydailynews.com/images/article/dropcaps/T_dc.gif> ravelers
bound for Florida by jet will face fewer weather delays now that flights
can bypass southern storms on oceanic trips.

The Federal Aviation Administration has expanded its radar coverage
along the East Coast with a new offshore system that went online
Thursday.

The $2 million system allows air-traffic controllers who monitor flights
in the metropolitan area to track jets as they take the alternate route
over the Atlantic Ocean to avoid severe weather conditions.

Although it may add 35 minutes to an hour to one's flight, the system
will create greater efficiency and reduce costs for airlines.

"I would expect that one severe weather night would pay for it," said
Michael McCormick, FAA air traffic manager for the New York Traffic
Control Center.

On any given night, airlines experience up to 300 flight delays at
Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports due to bad weather.

The new FAA system uses long-range radar equipment in Fort Fischer,
S.C., and Oceana, Va., to guide jets on a loop around restricted
military airspace on destinations between New York and Miami.

The system also will allow air-traffic controllers to reduce the
distance between aircraft traveling the route.

The route will tack on an extra 180 to 200 miles on trips, but will
prevent some travelers from having to wait for hours or experience
flight cancellations.

"You probably wouldn't even know it," McCormick said.

The overseas route had been used by airlines on international trips
between Europe and the southern U.S. or Caribbean.
