Emirates, the airline of the United Arab Emirates, signed a deal to buy GP7200-series engines to power the Super Jumbo Airbus A380-800 aircraft. Airbus is to begin delivering those jets to the airline in 2006. The airline had signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year at the Singapore Air Show to purchase the engines and has now formalized the deal, officials of the joint GE-Pratt & Whitney engine-making alliance said. It is the largest single engine order for the A380 aircraft, the officials said. GE Aircraft Engines, a partner in the alliance, is based in the Cincinna= ti suburb of Evendale. Pratt & Whitney is based in East Hartford, Conn. The Emirates airline flies to 58 destinations in 41 countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, Asia and Australia. In trading on the New York Stock Exchange, GE shares fell 85 cents to $29.30.
