Casey quits Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines Vice Chairman, CEO and President Paul Casey has resigned, effective June 30, the airline announced Friday.

Chairman John Adams will assume Casey's duties until a successor is named, the airline said in a statement.

"At 56, I'm ready to take some time off," Casey said. "I've been in this business for 30 years and the last five at Hawaiian have been the most satisfying."

Casey joined Hawaiian in 1997 after two years at the helm of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. Before that he spent eight years at Continental Airlines.

"He has accomplished all of the goals the board set forth when he joined the company," Adams said.

Casey said he worked to change Hawaiian's corporate culture "from command-and-control into a more collaborative approach to management," and the announcement of his departure credited him with giving the company a greater focus on marketing and sales.

Hawaiian employs 3,200 people, a third more than it did five years ago. In Casey's tenure the airline saw revenues rise almost 60 percent while cash reserves almost tripled.

Casey has been mentioned as a possible director of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The directorship opened shortly after Sept. 11 when Bob Fishman, called up for reserve duty at the Pentagon, noted that his term had only a few months to run and suggested to the board that he step down and let the board begin looking for a permanent replacement.

Businessman Rick Humphreys agreed to be interim director for $1 while this happened, but scaled back his involvement in March. When Casey's name surfaced, HTA officials said he had not applied for the job. Casey said he had been approached by some community leaders but only informally. At the time he also said he was busy with Hawaiian Airlines.
