System failure forces BWIA flight to turn around

A BWIA flight to Jamaica was forced to return to Piarco International
Airport on Sunday shortly after take-off when a vital system began to
fail. After half an hour in the air, the aircraft's captain noticed that a
warning light was on, indicating that the primary trim was not fully
functional. The primary trim is necessary to keep the aircraft level on its
course. BWIA's public relations officer, Clint Williams, said the pilots
immediately switched to an alternative system. "Everything has a back-up,"
Williams said. "In this case, the pilots followed procedure and everything
was fine." The aircraft returned to Piarco, where the system was replaced.
The incident made the 414 to Kingston almost three hours late. On Friday
night BWIA again faced some trouble. As a return flight from Jamaica
approached the runway around 7.30 pm, the aircraft almost ran into a pack
of stray dogs. The plane was forced to ascend again and radio for
assistance while they circled.
Had they continued the landing, they risked pulling one or more of the dogs
into their engines. A Liat aircraft also faced the same problem. An
Airports Authority official told the Express that within minutes a team was
dispatched to the runway, armed with equipment to capture the strays. They
managed to rein in the "pot hounds" after about 15 minutes.
"The Airports Authority is responsible for catching the strays," said the
official. "At this time, we are unable to provide more information on where
the dogs came from." Both the BWIA and Liat flights later landed safely.
