PHOENIX, March 25 (Reuters) - America West Airlines (AWA) on Monday said it simplified its everyday airfare structure, eliminating Saturday night stays and offering reduced one-way fares throughout the United States and Canada. The No. 8 U.S. airline, a unit of America West Holdings Corp., said the new pricing structure will result in significant reductions to its current, unrestricted walk-up fares. "Air travelers are demanding changes in the way airlines price and sell their service, and America West has responded with more flexible fares," said Scott Kirby, executive vice president of sales and marketing. America West, which received government loan guarantees to avoid bankruptcy in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, said its new pricing structure includes significantly reduced fares for one-way travel and for tickets bought with less than 14 days in advance and without a Saturday night stay. The roundtrip fare, for example, between Los Angeles and Boston, booked two weeks prior to departure with no Saturday night stay is $492, 76 percent less than the $1,920 charged by other major airlines. Similarly, a one-way ticket purchased one day prior to departure between these markets would be $396, a 66-percent reduction off the $1,155 charged by major airlines. Shares of most major U.S. airlines including America West were lower on the New York Stock Exchange. America West fell four percent to $5.24 in late trading. ©2002 Reuters Limited.
