Union to deal with BWIA layoffs Trinidad Guardian The Aviation Communication and Allied Workers Union is in the process of deciding what its counter measures will be to the BWIA's retrenchment exercise. The union issued a statement yesterday stating that it intends to hold a meeting tomorrow to deal with BWIA's layoffs. Last Friday, 44 workers were sent home from BWIA, with the union adamantly objecting to the retrenchment plan. ACAWU is in the process of negotiations, and officials were unavailable for comment on their plan of action yesterday. The airline has been reviewing and reorganising its operations to deal with the new economic realities of the aviation industry after the September 11, 2001 tragedy. BWIA intends to lay off 75 workers in the first phase of the programme.
