BERLIN –– Germany's Lufthansa AG said Sunday it will return to service next
month 10 of the 43 planes it idled after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United
States and open three new routes this summer.

The airline took the aircraft out of service in September and October. It
said Sunday it would increase the number of flights to the United States
this summer, adding extra flights from its main Frankfurt hub to cities
including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington.

Lufthansa said that its capacity this summer would remain some 10 percent
lower than it was in the same period in 2001, although it will offer 7
percent more seats than it has during the winter.

Besides the 10 aircraft returning to the skies, Lufthansa said that it would
introduce two new Airbus A-340 jets that were ordered before Sept. 11. It
also is opening routes in May from Munich to Boston, Tokyo and Shanghai.

"If the market livens up further, we will react flexibly and adjust our
capacity again if necessary," Lufthansa sales manager Thierry Antinori said
in a statement.

Earlier this month Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, reported a net loss
of 591 million euros ($516 million) for 2001, saying it was hurt by a weak
global economy and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. That followed a 2000 net
profit of 689 million euros.
