Toronto airport gets defibrillator units Last Updated Wed, 06 Mar 2002 15:51:41 TORONTO - Toronto's Pearson International Airport now has machines that can deliver a lifesaving pulse of electrical current to treat a person having a heart attack. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority has announced the installation of 75 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) through the airport's three terminals. The GTTA say a person suffering from sudden cardiac arrest has a 70 per cent chance of survival if they are treated within four minutes. The authority says trained staff, along with the accessibility of the AEDs, will help "to ensure passenger safety" and provide an "immediate response" to sudden cardiac arrest. It says the units will be spaced so that travellers will be no more than two minutes away from an AED anywhere in the passenger terminals. An automated external defibrillator analyzes the rhythm of a heart and will instruct the user on whether to administer a shock in an attempt to restore the heartbeat.
