Hello from bizjournals.com! David Mueller (kawika42@mac.com) thought you might like the following article from Pacific Business News: Taiwan airlines consider mergers ------------------------------------------------------------ In an echo of arguments made here for a merger of Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, the chairman of a Taiwan transportation company says Taiwan's airlines need to consolidate to face competition from bigger carriers based elsewhere. Evergreen CEO Chang Yung-fa says Taiwan's six airlines should merge into two. Taiwan has two international carriers, two regional ones, and two exclusively local ones. The international ones are China Airlines and EVA Airways, the latter owned by Evergreen. Taiwan's United Daily News says government regulators contacted for comment on Chang's assertion said they basically agree, especially since mainland China officials have begun to suggest that the major airlines of mainland China should consolidate into a smaller number of larger carriers for the same reason. Proponents of an Aloha-Hawaiian Airlines merger have made similar arguments about their ability to compete with larger mainland carriers. Copyright(c) American City Business Journals Inc.
