CHICAGO, Jan 30 (Reuters) - UAL Corp.'s (UAL) United Airlines said on Wednesday it will be furloughing fewer pilots than anticipated through spring. The No. 2 U.S. airline behind AMR Corp.'s (AMR) American Airlines would not give a reason, but the overall industry has begun to restore selected flights cut after the Sept. 11 attacks. United spokesman Joe Hopkins said the company had originally anticipated furloughing 1,200 pilots through the spring and will begin with 253 pilots effective March 2. For the entire period, however, "the projection is going to be much smaller than that," Hopkins said. United would not comment on its flying schedule other than to say it hopes to add back capacity as demand for travel returns. In Denver, for example, the airline now has 222 flights daily, up from 212 after the Sept. 11 attacks. American Airlines earlier this week outlined plans to gradually restore capacity throughout the spring via more frequent flights at its hubs. An Air Line Pilots Association hotline said United currently has 591 pilots on furlough, and the March round will bring that total to 844. The potential for one more round in April also exists, the pilots said.
