Air security requires worldwide standards: aviation industry Last Updated Sat Jan 26 17:35:57 2002 GENEVA - More than 200 members of the International Labour Organization are looking for ways to improve airline security and restore public confidence in air travel. The ILO calls the slowdown in travel, precipitated by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks involving hijacked planes, the worst crisis to hit the aviation industry since the Second World War. It estimates at least 400,000 jobs and billions of dollars have been lost. Delegates at the week-long conference agreed restoring consumer confidence is critical to any recovery. A spokesman for Air Canada said the number of people flying with his airline is starting to pick up. He believes that it's a sign customer confidence is slowly coming back. The ILO is calling for worldwide standards to improve airline security. It notes security and safety concerns are of a global nature and any weak link in the global security chain can endanger lives.
